Assessing the Susceptibility of Existing Pipelines to Hydrogen Embrittlement

چکیده
With fossil fuels being phased out and growing global interest in a hydrogen economy, there is demand for re-purposing existing pipelines transportation of gas. However, embrittlement (HE) can limit pipeline steel’s performance. In this study, the effect on mechanical properties an X60 base metal (polygonal ferrite/pearlite) its girth weld (acicular was measured with novel slow strain rate tensile (SSRT) test which hollow pipe-like specimens were internally pressurised nitrogen gas from 0 to 100 bars. Results showed that exposure H2 at bars reduced ductility by up 40% 14%. Reduction cross-sectional area (%RA) 28% 11% metal. Fracture surface analysis micro-void coalescence as well quasi-cleavage fracture characteristic HE. Susceptibility HE also observed form secondary longitudinal internal transverse cracks.

Refinement to the Existing Analytical Methods of Analysis of Buried Pipelines due to Strike-Slip Faulting
Analytical methods presented to analyze the buried steel pipelines at strike-slip fault crossing use the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The cross-section of a buried pipe that is completely surrounded by soil cannot rotate freely and would not be remained perpendicular to the bending line after deformation. So it would be better to take into consideration a rotation between the cross-section and ...
متن کاملGrain-boundary engineering markedly reduces susceptibility to intergranular hydrogen embrittlement in metallic materials
The feasibility of using ‘‘grain-boundary engineering” techniques to reduce the susceptibility of a metallic material to intergranular embrittlement in the presence of hydrogen is examined. Using thermomechanical processing, the fraction of ‘‘special” grain boundaries was increased from 46% to 75% (by length) in commercially pure nickel samples. In the presence of hydrogen concentrations betwee...
متن کاملPrevention of Hydrogen Embrittlement in Steels
The essential facts about the nature of the hydrogen embrittlement of steels have now been known for 140 years. It is diffusible hydrogen that is harmful to the toughness of iron. It follows, therefore, that the harmful influence of diffusible hydrogen can be mitigated by preventing its entry into steel or by rendering it immobile once it penetrates the material. This review deals with the meth...
متن کاملDecrease in Hydrogen Embrittlement Susceptibility of 10B21 Screws by Bake Aging
The effects of baking on the mechanical properties and fracture characteristics of low-carbon boron (10B21) steel screws were investigated. Fracture torque tests and hydrogen content analysis were performed on baked screws to evaluate hydrogen embrittlement (HE) susceptibility. The diffusible hydrogen content within 10B21 steel dominated the fracture behavior of the screws. The fracture torque ...
متن کاملHydrogen embrittlement of aluminum: the crucial role of vacancies.
We report first-principles calculations which demonstrate that vacancies can combine with hydrogen impurities in bulk aluminum and play a crucial role in the embrittlement of this prototypical ductile solid. Our studies of hydrogen-induced vacancy superabundant formation and vacancy clusterization in aluminum lead to the conclusion that a large number of H atoms (up to 12) can be trapped at a s...
